How to Fix a Leaking Tap — Before You Call a Plumber
A dripping tap is annoying and wastes water. Here's a step-by-step guide to the most common fixes you can try yourself — and when it's time to call in a professional.
A dripping tap isn't just annoying — a tap dripping once per second wastes around 3,000 litres of water a year. Before you call a tradesman, there are a few things you can try yourself. Here's what to check.
Tools You'll Need
Adjustable spanner, flathead screwdriver, Allen key set, and a cloth to protect chrome finishes. Turn off the water supply to the tap before you start — there's usually an isolation valve under the sink.
Step 1: Identify the Tap Type
Most UK homes have one of three types: traditional pillar taps (separate hot and cold), monobloc mixer taps (single lever), or dual-handle mixer taps. The repair approach differs for each.
Step 2: For Traditional Pillar Taps — Replace the Washer
Turn off the water, unscrew the tap head (the decorative cap usually pops off to reveal a screw), remove the headgear, and you'll find a rubber washer at the bottom. Replace it with a same-size washer from any DIY store. Reassemble and test.
Step 3: For Mixer Taps — Replace the Cartridge
Mixer taps don't use washers — they use ceramic cartridges. These wear out over time. Remove the handle (usually a grub screw under a caps on the side), unscrew the cartridge, and take it to a DIY store to match the replacement. Reassemble and test.
Step 4: Check the O-Rings
If the tap leaks from the base of the spout rather than the nozzle, the O-rings around the spout are probably worn. Pull the spout out (or unscrew it), replace the O-rings, and reassemble.
When to Call a Professional
If you've replaced the washer or cartridge and it's still dripping, the seat (the surface the washer presses against) may be worn and need re-cutting. If the pipework is corroded, the tap is seized, or you're not confident working with plumbing, it's best to call someone. A botched repair can cause a leak under the sink that you won't notice until the ceiling below is damaged.
